German lighting company Kandem Leuchten GmbH was founded in Leipzig in 1889. Kandem worked closely with the Bauhaus school, using many of the students designs in the production of its lamps. Through working with the Bauhaus school they built a great relationship with Bauhaus student & designer Marianne Brandt. Brandt designed many household items including what was to become a modern classic - The Kandem Desk Lamp. Although the Bauhaus school was closed in 1933, production of these lamps continued & the designs are now considered to be design classics. Unfortunately the Kandem company ceased production after WWII when the East Germany fell under Soviet control & the factory was taken over & became state owned. The Kandem factory continued producing the same designs under state owned ownership.
